Friday
The rain, wind and flooding from what remains of Hurricane Ida may have slowed things down in the Hampton Roads area the last few days. It certainly was no match for the intensity of Monster Jam fans. They braved the weather to see their favorite trucks compete for night number one with many vowing to return for the Saturday night show.
With several of the World Famous trucks home based within an hour of the Hampton Coliseum it is not a surprise that the fans turn out for two weekends per year. What is amazing is that each year the amount of fans grows. Monster Jam is alive and well.
The night began with a wheelie competition in which Grave Digger rolled. Randy Brown had already done his wheelie when he attempted to run hard into the turn and rolled Digger. “I didn’t think it was that tacky but apparently it was”, said Brown in an interview. “I’ll watch out for it the rest of the night and I’m sure the other drivers noted it also”.
Ricky Ownley drive Mopar Magic to a win in the wheelie competition. He also drove into the race finals but lost a front drive shaft and had to sit out the finals. Mopar Magic’s loss was Grave Digger’s second chance but even with a return to the race final he could not beat Steve Sim’s Stone Crusher.
The night also featured FMX and Mike “Wild Wild” West and his jet-powered Golf cart. The worlds only Golf Cart with more power than a Tiger Woods drive.
Monster Freestyle rounded out the night with Joe Sylvester rolling his Bad Habit truck after just a few seconds in freestyle. He began hard saving the truck after a launch over the FMX landing hill. It looked as though he was going to earn a high score from the judges until he attempted a quick turn on the starting line end. In short, a less than :20 run costs the truck points. The winning Freestyle went to Grave Digger and Randy Brown. Digger earned a score of 24 from the judges.
