It all began today. Well, actually there's been all kinds of different things going on here in Las Vegas all week, however, today was the "Official Monster Jam World Finals Kick Off Party" and what that means is that a weekend of fun and excitement all starts here.
The party began as several of the trucks lined up outside Sunset Station. Grave Digger lead the event by smashing an honorary car decorated with a large pretend casino chip. After that the trucks, which included Monster Mutt, Sobe, Avenger, Madusa, Power Forward, Maximum Destruction, Sudden Impact, and of course Grave Digger were parked on display for visitors to check out and take pictures with. USHRA Officials also used that time to look over all the safety checks on the truck.
You could tell that the Monster Jam had invaded Las Vegas because throughout the parking lot, the casino, and in the elevators heading up to the rooms were kids with their parents waving their checkered flags or treasuring the t-shirt or program they just got signed. They would stop over by the Club Madrid to get their things signed by the drivers who were hanging out 2 at a time all day. Each and every one of them seemed very excited to be meeting the men and women that they looked up to.
The 2 most common questions overheard all day, especially at the hotel registration desk were, "Excuse me where are the Monster Trucks?" and "Who's your favorite Monster Truck?" However, let me just mention that if you just looked out the window, there was no way you could miss these giant monsters arranged outside.
Poor Dennis. Hanging out like a trooper despite the injury to his arm, the right-handed legendary Grave Digger driver signed each and every autograph with his left-hand and took pictures with everyone. He mentioned that he was still in some pain because he recently had some pins removed from his arm. However, he jokingly said that when his other arm is better, he would be able to sign autographs faster with both hands at once. He seemed happy to be there and posed for pictures with some of the other drivers also.
The party continued at the hotel with a live country band and a raffle lead by Announcer Joe Lowe. The prizes included several valuable things like Monster Jam t-shirts autographed by all the drivers, Sunset Station souvenirs, dinner gift certificates, and most importantly, tickets to the World Finals. USHRA official Keith Speller got a big surprise when he walked in as the entire party and the band sang "Happy Birthday" to him in honor of his 30th birthday. Imagine having a big birthday party with ALL of your favorite monster truck drivers present. It was very cool!
All in all it was a great day. The track is almost all set to go and tomorrow's agenda includes the Driving Experience and most importantly qualifying. The weather was sunny and beautiful, and the anticipation of what this weekend is about to bring is enough to keep anyone on the edge of their seat.
